OriGene Authentication Technology
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a history of thousands of years. However, there have been cases of confusion or deliberate adulteration in the use of medicinal materials, which not only affects the therapeutic effectiveness of TCM but can also lead to life-threatening poisoning incidents. To prevent such situations, accurate identification of Chinese herbal medicine is of utmost importance.
DNA barcoding technology has been widely used for species identification, tracing the origin of medicinal herbs, and product authentication
effectively differentiate common counterfeit and easily confused varieties of medicinal herbs
particularly suitable for medicinal herbs that lack unique chemical markers, such as deer antler and seahorse
"Chinese Pharmacopoeia," "United States Pharmacopeia," and "Hong Kong Chinese Materia Medica Standards" have adopted DNA technology as a means of herbal identification
The Government Chinese Medicines Testing Institute in the Hong Kong SAR has also adopted DNA technology as one of the complementary methods for Chinese medicine identification

Arrangement for DNA Test Service
Sample Size
Each sample should provide a minimum of 10 grams for DNA analysis testing.
2-3 random portions will be extracted from each sample for testing purposes.
Lead Time
The standard DNA species identification for raw materials typically takes around 3 weeks.
Depending on the product characteristics and specific circumstances,
if further customized identification testing protocols are required,
the testing time will depend on the complexity of the samples and tests.
Test Report
The testing fee will include an electronic test certificate.
Upon customer request,
a comprehensive test report can be provided,
including testing methods and result analysis.
OriGene Test Case Study
Ziheche
- Confirmed the sample is not animal tissue using iodine test method
- and not human placental tissue using DNA sequencing method
- The test results received widespread attention in Ta Kung Pao newspaper
Porphyra yezoensis (Zicai)
- The DNA sequencing method was used to confirm the identity of algae species in Zicai
- In “Fish Egg River”, the DNA sequencing method was used to confirm the identity of the algae species in Zicai
Shihu (Dendrobium)
- DNA sequencing technology can distinguish different Shihu varieties such as Jinchai Shihu, Huoshan Shihu, and Tiepi Shihu
- The identification results were analyzed and comply with the requirements of the “Chinese Pharmacopoeia” for Shihu
Ajiao (Donkey-hide gelatin)
- By measuring a small DNA fragment sequence, the test can identify if the ajiao product contains donkey DNA components
Cordyceps militaris
- The DNA sequencing method was used to confirm the species origin in Chinese medicine capsule products
- The identification results were analyzed and comply with the “Chinese Pharmacopoeia” requirements for Cordyceps militaris species
Huqishen (American ginseng)
- Some illegal traders cut and sell cheap ginseng as expensive Huqishen.
- Through DNA barcoding analysis, American ginseng and Huqishen each have unique DNA sequence fragments, which helps to distinguish between the two and can also be used to identify other counterfeit ginseng products
